Competiton Themes

2018 THEME: SMART PLANET

The 2018 WAC theme is Smart Planet. Students will examine inventive and connected networks of energy, transportation, communication, and education to create solutions for a better planet. Students who participated in the 2016 WAC Smart Village and the 2017 WAC Smart City can capitalize on their knowledge of integrating villages and cities with innovative ideas to build lasting solutions for our planet.

*Smart is the use of the experience, knowledge, innovation, technology and local expertise that leads to the improvement in the quality of life as defined by the local community and within its cultural context.

2017 THEME: SMART CITY

The 2017 WAC Theme was Smart Planet. Students explored the future of global smart cities as they proposed solutions to providing resources and infrastructure to cities as their populations grow.

See the 2017 WAC students perspectives about SMART CITIES and their World Affairs Challenge experience.

2016 THEME: SMART VILLAGE

The WAC theme for 2016 was The Smart Village. Students examined how remote, often off-grid communities are integrating the basic necessities of life – water, agriculture, energy, sanitation, health, and education – to enhance the lives of some two billion inhabitants of the Earth.
