Judge Training

2013 World Affairs Challenge Planning Guide - This is the document that we give to team leaders that really explains what is expected of participating teams. It includes the grading rubrics that judges will be using on the event day, and a bunch of information that can help you out in being the best judge you can be! We highly recommend reading through this document before starting the training videos below. When you do watch the videos, have those rubrics on hand because they are referred to quite often.

Judge Training Videos

Thank you for volunteering to judge this year’s World Affairs Challenge. It’s going to be a great event! Past judges may self-review the rubrics and videos below to prepare for the event on April 13, 2013.
For a quick brush-up on the judging process, we are suggesting the following self-training activities:
1) Review the Judges Guide 2013. This guide provides background to the question that will be addressed in the students’ Formal Presentations (FP). It then outlines the judging criteria and instructions. It also explains how the Collaborative Question (CQ) process works and the judging criteria and instructions for this presentation.
2) There is a short activity at the end of the Judges Guide. It was designed to help judges practice phrasing questions and constructive criticism for the students. It gives an example of a statement that might discourage a student and then provides space to compose a more sensitive way to phrase the same comment.
3) Watch both an FP and CQ video.
You can find videos of other presentations, including last year’s winners, under 2012 Event Media
4) After you watch each video, practice completing the fp_rubric_2013 and the cq_rubric_2013 so you are familiar with the specific scoring criteria. The Judges Guide provides suggestions and advice from other past judges on how to do this.
Thank you again for supporting this year’s World Affairs Challenge. I look forward to seeing you on April 13th.
